How to Choose a Software Development Company: 9 Questions to Ask Before You Sign
Picking a software partner is a high-stakes decision you'll make with limited information. These nine questions cut through the pitch.
Most people choose a software team the way they choose a restaurant they've never been to—gut feel, a nice website, a friend's recommendation. That's fine for dinner. For a five- or six-figure build, you want better signal. Here are the questions we'd ask if we were hiring us.
1. “Can I talk to a past client?”
Portfolios are curated; references are honest. A team proud of its work will connect you with someone in a week. Hesitation here tells you a lot.
2. “Who will actually work on my project?”
Agencies sometimes pitch with senior people and deliver with juniors. Ask who's on your team, their experience, and whether that changes after you sign.
3. “What happens when we disagree on scope?”
You will. The answer reveals how they handle the hard parts—change requests, trade-offs, saying no. “That never happens” is a red flag, not reassurance.
4. “How do you handle testing and bugs?”
If quality assurance is an afterthought, you become the tester. Look for teams that build testing into the process, not tack it on at the end.
5. “What do I own at the end?”
You should own all the code, the accounts, and the infrastructure—full stop. Some vendors keep you locked in by holding the keys. Get ownership in writing.
6. “What's your timeline—and what makes it slip?”
A confident, specific timeline with named risks beats a vague “a few months.” It shows they've actually thought about your project, not just your invoice.
7. “What happens after launch?”
Software isn't a one-time purchase. Ask about support, monitoring, and iteration. A partner who disappears at launch leaves you stranded the moment real users show up.
8. “How will you communicate?”
Weekly demos and a shared channel beat a monthly status email. You want to feel progress and catch wrong turns early, while they're cheap to fix.
9. “Why is your quote that number?”
A good team can break down where the money goes—line by line, before you sign. If they can't, or won't, you can't tell what you're paying for. (Curious what you're actually buying? Here's what building a product looks like, stage by stage.)
Cheap and fast and good—you get to pick the honest team that tells you which two you're really getting.
A note on local vs overseas
Offshore can be cheaper on paper. But timezone gaps, communication friction, and “who do I call when it breaks” costs are real. A team in Singapore or Malaysia that understands your market and answers in your working hours often wins on total value—especially for a first build.
If you're weighing options, that's exactly the conversation we're happy to have—no pressure. Learn a bit about how we work, browse the projects we've shipped, or just message us and ask us these nine questions yourself.
