Do You Still Need a Mobile App in 2026, or Is a Web App Enough?

By DEVR Tech Team  ·  11 February 2026  ·  6 min read

“We need an app” is often shorthand for “we need to be on people's phones.” Those aren't the same thing—and the difference can save you a lot of money.

Plenty of businesses ask us to build a native app when a web app would serve them better, faster, and for less. Just as often, it's the reverse. The right answer isn't fashion—it's fit. Here's how to think about it in 2026.

First, the vocabulary

Choose a web app when…

Choose a native app when…

An app icon on someone's home screen is prime real estate. Earn it with daily value—or don't pay the rent.

The honest middle: PWAs

For a lot of businesses in 2026, a well-built PWA hits the sweet spot: installable, works offline, sends notifications, and you maintain a single codebase. It won't match native for the most demanding cases, but for a large share of “we need an app” requests, it delivers 90% of the value for a fraction of the cost and hassle.

A quick gut check

Ask how often a typical user will open it. Daily? Lean native. Weekly or less? A web app or PWA probably wins. Then ask whether you truly need deep device hardware. If not, you may be about to spend native money on a browser problem.

We build both, and we'll tell you honestly which your product needs—even when the honest answer is the cheaper one. See how we've approached it across our portfolio, or tell us your idea and we'll point you to the right path.
