MVP vs Full Build: What Should a Startup Actually Ship First?

Every founder we meet has the whole product in their head—the dashboard, the social feed, the referral engine, the AI bit. It's exciting. It's also the fastest way to spend your entire budget before a single real user has tried the thing that matters.

What an MVP actually is (and isn't)

A minimum viable product isn't a half-broken version of your app. It's the smallest complete thing that delivers your core value and lets real people use it. “Minimum” modifies scope, not quality. A shaky MVP teaches you nothing except that people don't like shaky apps.

The question that cuts through everything

Ask: what is the one thing that, if it works, proves people want this? Build that. Everything else—however lovely—is a hypothesis you can test later with real money and real users behind you.

You don't need the whole bridge to find out if anyone wants to cross the river. You need a rope and one brave person.

When a full build is the right call

MVP isn't gospel. Go bigger up front when:

• You already have validation—paying customers, a waitlist, a business you're digitising. You're not testing demand; you're serving it.
• The core value only appears at scale—some marketplaces and network products genuinely need more to feel real.
• Trust is the product—fintech, health, anything where a rough edge reads as “unsafe.”

Even then, we'd phase it. A plan that ships value in stages beats a big-bang launch you can't course-correct.

The expensive mistake

The classic error isn't building an MVP or a full product—it's building a full product nobody validated, then discovering the core assumption was wrong. Now you've spent the budget on features built around a mistake. An MVP fails cheap and early. A full build fails expensive and late.

We usually map three horizons with founders: the MVP (prove the core), V1 (the features that make it sticky), and later (the nice-to-haves that keep appearing in meetings). Then we build the MVP properly, launch, and let real usage decide what's next. It keeps you in control of both your money and your roadmap.
